A "blurb" is the story summary on the back of a book (usually 150 words or less) written to entice you to read the book. Think of your visits to a bookstore or library. A book's front cover may catch your eye, but if the blurb doesn't interest you the book goes back on the shelf; if it resonates with you, you bring the book home.
The goal of this meme is to:
Write a book jacket blurb (150 words or less) so enticing that potential readers would feel compelled to buy the book.
This week's book blurb is for this cover photo:
So without further ado, here it is:
Hipsin's Little Trip
Little! Yeah. Hipsin's mother had always told him he was little, but this was ridiculous.
Ok, together with Dedatur he'd stolen a shuttle to escape the Droundari prisoner transport spaceship. So - no penal colony on Sweldova 9. No lifetime of sweat and toil, but this?
In the name of Wiren! That... thing was clearly a discarded refreshment container, but their shuttle could fly into the opening and they could spend two days exploring. They called me little! They had no idea.
Now they'd have to find a way to survive. Without enough fuel to get away this was their home, like it or not.
What did we do? We armed our weapons and went looking for the inhabitants. They'd be the biggest threat, so we should meet them face to face.
That was our biggest mistake...

Word count 137 excluding the title.
Please check out the other entries for the book blurb. There is a linky to them all here.
This is awesome, and the title is a perfect match for your blurb. Hehehe...poor Hipsin and Dedatur are in for some real adventures. (How do you arrive at these names? Do you have some methodology, or do they erupt from your creative mind fully formed?) This made me think of "Land of the Giants," which is an old TV show from. . .hmmm. . .the 60's, I think. It wasn't on very long, which made me sad, because I loved it! And I love your blurb as well. The tone is light and engaging, and I like Hipsin's voice already. I'd love to read this.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lisa :-) On the names, I have a teeny little confession. I keep a list of interesting 'word verification' words in my notebook. Every time I see one that looks fun I add it to my list.
ReplyDeleteSo... Hipsin and Dedatur were word verification prompts.
Thanks for your kind comment.
These word verifications have a lot to answer for! But I liked the scale-shifting here - long long time since I read Azimov et al but remember being impressed with 'Wonderful Journey(? things small enough to enter veins etc.)
ReplyDeleteOhhhhhhhhhh, ask me if I LOVE this!!! Yes indeed. What a fantastic opening for a true, and exciting, and I'm sure surreal adventure!! Fabulous.
ReplyDeleteHere is my Blurb
Have a great weekend.
Your mind was in adventure overdrive here, very original take. Such interesting names for your characters too!
ReplyDeleteThis would be such a fascinating read. I'm always intrigued by extremes of size.
ReplyDeleteHi Tony ... what an imagination you have! So, little drops of beer would be a huge lake, and germs would be huge monsters? Man, they are in a fix, that is for sure. Then what happens when the can is picked up or kicked, and thrown into the garbage or recyling? The possibilities are endless. I really want to read more of your book.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend,
Kathy M.
I love what you confessed about the names. I've always wanted the job of making up verification words. LOL
ReplyDeleteCan't imagine what they'll find inhabiting a beer can. I've known people who lived for beer, and even lived on beer, but inside the can? No knowing what Hipsin and Dedatur will find in there. "That was our biggest mistake" is always a great hook, along with the classic "That was their first mistake."

Hipsin may be little, but I sense the story could be big. Will he battle malt gnomes? Does the can hold insects that can overpower their shuttle? Are the Droundarian's searching for them? Your miniature world has so many possibilities. I can't wait to adventure with Hipsin and Dedatur.
ReplyDeleteHehehe awesome application of the photo! ^_^
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to read Bolter Baron this weekend.
Tony.. I really like it. Its amazing what you come up with. Hipsins Little Trip sounds great.
ReplyDeleteI loved this, Tony...such a treat to get a hit of sci-fi! I did a small piece on alien abduction myself last week.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely buy this book...little Hipsin rocks!
Hipsin sounds like a great character!
ReplyDeleteSo, the Lilliputians came to Gulliver this time, huh? Boy, are they in for a surprise when everyone shows up! (Not to mention those pesky wild critters who just love to chase and catch small and animated things.)
ReplyDeleteBoy you do sci-fi well Tony! The names are fantastic and the story, well, out of this world!
ReplyDeleteThe idea of aliens in there is absolutely irresistible--not to mention the way Hipsin's personality manages to come through in so few words! And I keep a list of "word verification" words, too! And have used them as names. LOL...thought I was the only one.
ReplyDeleteWord verification is the font of unusual names. A character that will appear towards the end of Cosmic Seed, and feature heavily in the sequel, was named via word verification!
ReplyDeleteHispin might be little but he sounds like he can handle anyone bigger. Fantastic blurb.
